UTSW Clinical Research Unit (CRU)/Investigational Drug Service (IDS)

Overview of Services

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and the Investigational Drug Service (IDS) at UT Southwestern’s for the Office of Clinical Research is an institutional resource for investigators designed to support the safe and ethical conduct of research while enhancing the research experience for study participants. The CRU and IDS provide a set of standard, cost-effective services to supplement resources provided through investigators' own departments and clinics.


The CRU/IDS staff are dedicated to providing excellent customer service and employing best practices for research procedures to ensure each protocol is managed efficiently and accurately.  Overall, the CRU/IDS strives to be the gold standard of research on campus, providing high-quality, cost-effective research resources and services that facilitate superior translational research outcomes. 



Services offered by the Office of Clinical Research: CRU and IDS include:

  • Three outpatient clinics (Aston, Sprague and Bass-Covid Unit)
  • Research Nursing Services
  • Facility-usage-only Visit
  • Drug Infusions, Phlebotomy, EKGs, etc.
  • Nutrition services, including meal design, preparation, nutrition assessment, education, and counseling, and food record nutrient analysis.
  • Basic laboratory services or usage of laboratory facilities and equipment
  • Clinical Research Coordinator services
  • Research pharmacy services, including drug randomization, dispensation, and storage
  • Inpatient services at Zale-Lipshy Pavilion Hospital
